Most Social Security disability attorneys seek older disability applicants, and for good reason. Once an applicant is over age 50, he or she has a much easier time qualifying for disability benefits. But is age all that matters? In many situations, a younger applicant earns attorneys significantly higher sums in back pay. Here are just a couple of hypothetical examples where younger applicants would be great cases for your firm.

Younger Applicants Have Children

Most applicants age 50+ have children in college or beyond. Younger applicants will usually have minor children, who then in turn will qualify for a back pay. Here are two hypothetical examples:

Joe applies for disability benefits at age 55. His claim is approved after one year, and he is awarded $1,500 per month. His wife is 52 and his children are in college, so there are no auxiliary benefits factored into his attorney’s settlement. His attorney receives $2625.

Mark applies for disability benefits at age 30. His claim is approved after one year, and he is awarded $1,200 per month. His wife is 28 and they have two young children, so he’s eligible for the household maximum of 180% of his monthly benefits. His attorney receives $3,937.

In this hypothetical example, the younger applicant earned less income, but his family’s auxiliary benefits added more than $1,000 in back pay for his attorney.

Younger Applicants Don’t Necessarily Earn Less Income

The tech industry grows every year, and high-paying jobs are going to younger and younger professionals. A young applicant might have a slightly lower chance of qualifying for disability benefits, but he or she may earn significantly more income.

According to Glassdoor, the national average salary for a software engineer is $95,000. The approximate monthly disability benefit for a software engineer with 10 years’ experience would be $2,497.

A general/operations manager earns on average $60,000 (while this will of course vary wildly depending on the company). This applicant would receive approximately $2,059 per month. If two applicants were approved for these jobs at the national average, the younger software engineer may make much more, even with less work history.

Always Call Your Potential Cases

The average Social Security lead we generate is over age 45. While we do allow our Social Security clients to screen SSD leads by age, we always recommend you personally speak with every claimant who reaches out to your firm, or any Social Security disability lead you receive from eGenerationMarketing. There is no way to tell how viable a case is from a handful of data and a short case description. It’s possible that you could pay to throw away slam-dunk cases. Younger claimants may have a tougher time getting approved, but moving onto the hearing stage only means more back pay will come your way once your client is eventually approved.
