SSDI claims are more desirable for attorneys for numerous reasons—not only do SSDI claimants receive higher payments, but it’s often easier to qualify for SSDI due to household income not counting against a claimant. Hundreds of conditions are listed in the SSA’s Blue Book, but while reviewing approved claims, some conditions are more commonly approved than others. Here are some of the most commonly approved conditions:

Cancer

According to the SSA, neoplastic diseases (cancers) make up more than 11% of all approved SSDI claims. This makes cancer the third most common qualifying condition category.

Very few attorneys turn down cancer claims, but some applicants choose to start the Social Security process after an initial diagnosis. If you’ve been contacted by someone who seems to have an early stage of cancer, do not immediately dismiss the claim. It’s possible that the cancer has returned after a round of radiation or chemotherapy, which automatically qualifies for benefits.

Back Problems

Musculoskeletal disorders make up more than one of every three approved conditions. These disabilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Spinal injuries
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Amputation

Back problems are commonly approved because they typically affect older applicants. Once someone can apply via Grid Rules starting at age 50, the chances of approval increase dramatically. We ask our leads for a short 100-word description of their case, so do not dismiss a lead that’s indicated he or she has “back pain.” It’s possible that the claimant has a serious illness and was simply unable to give a thorough case description.

Mental Disorders

While most attorneys prefer to not take on claimants with mood disorders, the numbers do not lie: more than 15% of applicants are approved with a mood disorder.

It’s important to not assume that every applicant with a mood disorder is only able to apply for SSI benefits. Of the 15% who are approved with a “mental disorder,” only 1.1% have an intellectual disability, and 0.3% have autism. This means that the vast majority of approved claimants have worked throughout life and have recently been diagnosed with a mental disability.

Heart Problems

Circulatory system disorders make up 11% of all approved SSDI claims. Again, these conditions tend to be approved because they affect older applicants. People with heart problems often have additional disabilities as well.

Most Social Security disability applicants don’t realize that you should include as many disabling conditions as possible in your application, and the more diagnoses an applicant has, the more likely he or she is to be approved. An applicant who’s trying to get disability benefits for diabetes or high blood pressure may have far more disabling conditions in addition that he or she simply did not include in her case description.
