It’s March Madness season and you know what that means: lots and lots of basketball. From the heartbreak to the triumph, March Madness is jam packed with excitement. The tournament is not only one of the best sporting events of the year, but it is also an example of great marketing. Here are a few tips that your law firm can learn from the NCAA during this month-long mayhem.

1) Keep it Simple

The NCAA created a brand for each step of the tournament by coining the phrases “March Madness,” “Selection Sunday,” “Sweet Sixteen,” “Elite Eight,” and “Final Four.” When creating your firm’s brand, you want it to be memorable. Keeping branding short, sweet, and to the point will help your law firm stay in people’s minds. This will hopefully make your firm the first thing that comes to mind when a potential claimant seeks legal aid.

2) Stay Relevant

The ways consumers find content changes every day. In addition to advertising on television, the NCAA does a great job of communicating through other relevant sources such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. The NCAA makes sure that you can find information regarding the tournament on any social media platform. Connecting with your potential clients through different channels will make your law firm easily accessible, while staying up to date with these platforms will help to further promote your firm’s brand. This is important for even Social Security disability attorneys or advocates—according to the Pew Research Center, over half of Americans over age 50 use Facebook for 20 minutes or more every day.

3) Have a Plan

The NCAA basketball tournament started in 1939 with only eight teams. There were no brackets, no “Final Four,” and no madness. Each year the tournament grew, slowly but surely, into the spectacle it is today. By understanding its strengths and weaknesses, the NCAA transformed the small tournament into a nationwide movement. Knowing where your firm excels and how to promote your expertise can help you to do the same. Having a well-rounded plan of attack will keep your firm organized and make sure that it is optimizing all of its marketing channels.

For instance, a great way to promote your skillset would be to add a testimonials page on your firm’s website from happy clients. Claimants who’ve won their claim with your firm’s help would be glad to send along a glowing review of your firm. Testimonials are key for boosting your online credibility for potential clients.

4) Be Adaptable

A lot has happened since the NCAA first began promoting March Madness, but the NCAA always managed to stay ahead of the curve. Through trial and error, it has determined what works best. With technology and new forms of marketing constantly changing, make sure that your law firm is staying on top of new ways to attract potential clients. Stay away from outdated methods and don’t be afraid to try new ones. Long gone are the days where taking out an ad in the Yellow Book could get your firm all of the clients you need for the year. You never know how profitable a new marketing channel will be for your firm until you try it.
